America's Religion

Is there no balm in Gilead, is there no physician there?  Jeremiah 8:22

We live in a psychological society – it has permeated every segment of our culture. I am afraid that what I am going to say will offend a great many, perhaps this is for the better. Maybe they will stop and think.

One fact is so obvious that most miss it. Psychology is a religion, a very powerful secular religion. I would add that it has become a state religion – America’s favorite religion. For those who would argue that it is a science are sadly mistaken – brainwashed.

The Church must take a good part of the blame for this state of affairs. Theologians and scholars have tended to look at the Bible through the narrow confines of theology alone. Now this is not all bad at all for it has defined and refined the great doctrines of the faith.

Unfortunately though, it has caused the Church to present a gospel that saves, but ignore one that heals. What is needed is a balance, a blending of doctrine and practical practice.

I am afraid that we have rejected the simplicity of the Word of God and embraced the complexity of man-made systems. The result has been a serious credibility gap in the rank and file Christians between their faith in God, and their belief that God through His Word can address and heal the emotional needs they face.

It is no mistake that the Bible refers to God as Jehovah Rapha – the God who heals. It is no mistake that the Bible, God’s Word addresses everything that man faces – there is nothing new under the sun.

I think one of the great tragedies of Christendom that the Bible has not been taught from the pulpit nor received in the pew as sufficient to handle the emotional needs of modern man. This, of course is pure hogwash.

There is a healing model in the Bible – it deals with one’s potential, not just one’s problems. It deals with solutions, not just symptoms. God’s Word or man’s wisdom. The Church needs to give God’s Word a chance.

God’s word not man’s wisdom is the need of the hour.
