The other day a friend dropped by my office and gifted me a glass bottle filled with sand from Dayton Beach, Florida. I looked into the bottle and noticed the sand was very fine and very light in color. You may be asking yourself “what does sand and thoughts about people have in common?” Good questions. Let me explain. My friend asked me to open my hand while he dropped a pinch of sand onto my palm and said, “count the grains of sand.” Being the comic that I am, I said “946.” He looked me straight in the eye and said, “How many grains of sand are in the glass bottle I’m holding?” I said, “757,932,836.” He didn’t bat an eye but said, “Stay with me, how many grains of sand are on the whole beach of Daytona?” Of course I couldn’t come up with the exact number so I gave an approximate number of 692 megakatrilian, 342 bazillian. Once again, he said, “Stay with me. How many grains of sand on all the beaches in all the world, all the grains of same at the bottom of the seas, oceans and rivers and all the grains of sand in all the deserts?” I told him I was sorry by my numerical vocabulary was greatly lacking and I didn’t see his point other than talking about a lot of sand. He said exactly and quoted Psalms 139:17-18a (NLT) “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God! They are innumerable! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!” My breath caught in my throat. It was incomprehensible that God could think about me so completely and constantly and thoroughly and not even get tired or think unkind thoughts about me. But there it was in His Word. God’s precious thoughts about you are so vast in number they can not be counted. His precious thoughts are thoughts of love, compassion, goodness and kindness. Not for calamity, but for a future and a hope. His precious thoughts are specifically and uniquely about you and for your wellbeing. Precious thoughts so vast in number, they outnumber the grains of sand in all the earth. As you rush through the day today, take a moment and remember there is Someone who loves you so much that His thoughts for you are never ending.
