Honor One Another

This is the result of a challenge issued by a very godly, older man who has been in the ministry for 40 years. He challenged us to do a study in the New Testament of the “one another” passages. I did that study and came up with quite a list of ways God calls us to relate to each other. The study made a real impact in my life and I hope that it will in yours as well. I would encourage you to look up the Scriptures in your Bible and see how God may want you to apply them to your circumstances in life.

Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10b NIV

Give preference to one another in honor. Romans 12:10b NAS

What does this word "honor" really mean? It carries the idea "to prize, to value." So, to honor another person says that we treat them as being very valuable.

Have you noticed that everything God calls us to do in our relationships with others, He has already done for us? God says for us to honor others, but He first says that He honors us.

He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. Psalm 91:15

God honors us. He says we are very valuable. Our ability to honor another person is related to recognizing God’s honor for each one of us. It is out of that sense of value God gives me and my realization of the value God gives others that I am able to value them or honor them.

How do we show honor to others? I think that Romans 12:10 gives us a clue when it says to give preference to others. It reminds me of Philippians 2:3.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.

If we approach people with a focus on their value rather than our own agenda or other selfish motivations, we will be showing them honor. It is an attitude of serving, putting others’ needs and desires before our own. I pray that we will each seek to live out this verse in our own families first and then with others we know in the body of Christ. Think of how we can come together in love and unity with that kind of attitude.
